Chris Moyles is leaving his BBC Radio 1 breakfast show this September (2012) to be replaced by current late night R1 presenter Nick Grimshaw.

Moyles, whose show has won two Sony Golds since taking over Sara Cox in 2004, announced the news on air: 'We're off. I wanted to let you know. A couple more months of us, then it's someone else's turn. Thank you for listening.' He is still contracted to the radio station until 2014 after signing a two and a half year deal last year and is keen to discuss presenting a new show.

'I'd like to thank Chris', Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper told BBC News. 'Quite simply he's been the most successful breakfast show host in Radio 1 history. He's done it for more than eight and half years and he's been fantastic.' This is certainly true given that the amount of Radio 1 listeners increased from 9.73 million to 11.88 million in 2010 since the 38-year-old took over the show and he overtook Tony Blackburn as the longest serving breakfast show presenter in 2009. However, according to the official radio figures the amount of listeners tuning into the show has decreased going from a sizeable 7.52 million last year (2011) to 7.10 million.

It seems the BBC Trust has been pressing Cooper to make changes and aim to attract a younger audience. He has already made a few changes, moving GREG JAMES to a 4-7pm slot and SCOTT MILLS to 1-4pm as well as upgrading Gemma Cairney to a weekend slot on Radio 1 having previously presented on Radio 1xtra.

So the Ego is about to fly the nest and about time too....Moyles was getting complacent and repetative as well as being out of touch with younger listeners. Time for some new blood and even newer jokes!Good luck for the future Moyles...I hear they are looking for ex talent on the Falklands stations....

A great shame. I can understand the move that Radio 1 are making, but as a die-hard fan of the show I would have loved them to have reached 10 years. I'll take 8 and a half though :'-)
