Actor Christoph Waltz is celebrating after winning the first Oscar of the night at the 85th annual ceremony on Sunday (24Feb13).

Waltz collected the prize for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, marking his first win since taking home the same trophy for his part in the director's Inglorious Bastards in 2009.

He said, "We participated in a hero's journey, the hero here being Quentin. You scaled the mountain because you're not afraid of it. You slayed the dragon, because you're not afraid of it. And you crossed through fire because it's worth it."

Meanwhile, host Seth MACFarlane got the ceremony off to a good start, garnering laughs from the crowd by poking fun at notoriously-straight-faced nominee Tommy Lee Jones, joking, "The quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh begins now."

Afterwards he was interrupted by William Shatner as his iconic Star Trek character James T. Kirk, who warned MACFarlane to tone down his jokes after looking into the future and seeing his bleak reviews.

As a result, the funnyman turned up the class by bringing out Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum, who performed a ballroom routine while MACFarlane sang Fred Astaire's The Way You Look Tonight, and then Daniel Radcliffe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who danced and sang to Frank Sinatra's High Hopes.

The awards show is currently taking place at the Dolby Theatre.
