Ordinarily new, highly promoted TV talk shows will debut with inflated ratings as viewers tune in out of curiosity. Such was not the case on Monday with CNN's new morning show New Day, however, as it drew fewer viewers than the show it replaced. In fact, it averaged just 247,000 total adults and 95,000 25-54-year-olds, putting it in third place among the four most-viewed cable news channels (The Others are Fox News, with 1.06 million viewers during the morning hours; MSNBC, with 355,000 viewers; and HLN with 215,000). Among the 25-54 age group, it was dead last. New Day, which is anchored by Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan, represents the first major programming overhaul at CNN by its new chief, Jeff Zucker, who burnished his reputation as a young man by turning NBC's Today show into a morning powerhouse. Prior to New Day's launch Zucker had downplayed any expectations for big ratings, saying, We're in this for the long haul. Meanwhile, today's (Wednesday) New York Times is reporting that NBC has removed Joe Michaels as director of the Today show, which he has helmed for the last 18 years, and given him a new job with the title of senior director. A new director has not been named.
