Colton Dixon, a contestant on this year's American Idol, has been asked to tone down his overtly Christian act by show executives. The 20-year-old devout Christian has been told he won't have any chance of winning the reality competition if he keeps referring to God, reports the New York Daily News.

Colton first attracted the attention of producers after telling Today.com that he answers to a higher authority than the voting American Idol viewers. He explained, "When we first started the Twitter and Facebook stuff, they said beware of political and religious tweets.Just because it can turn off voters or whatever. But, you know, being a Christian is who I am. It is a part of me musically. It is what I want to do after the show - go into Christian music." Dixon has made it through to the final stage of this year's competition after impressing judges with his powerful vocal performances, though he still admits to praying before each performance, saying, "I wake up and I do devotional every morning. It reminds me why I am here, which is to share the love of God".

Recent high profile stars to proclaim their faith include Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow and New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin. One Twitter user suggested Colton "can't Tebow his way to a win" on the show, though the singer immediately hit back, replying, "I don't follow tebow, I follow a guy named Jesus. I'm just trusting His plans. Whatever that may be".
