Classical composer Elliott Carter has died at the age of 103.

The musician passed away on Monday (05Nov12), but his cause of death was unknown as Wenn went to press.

Born in 1908, Carter started his career studying with legendary French composer Nadia Boulanger in the 1930s, and was famed for his rhythmically complex music.

The star, who celebrated his 100th birthday with a gala at New York's Carnegie Hall, was honoured with two Pulitzer Prizes in his lifetime - in 1960 and 1973 - and also boasted a National Medal of Arts award for his dedication to the arts.

Carter is survived by his son and a grandson.
