Composer Joel Goldsmith has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 54.
The musician, best known for his work on the Star Trek and Stargate sci-fi franchises, died on Saturday (28Apr12).
The son of Oscar-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith broke into the industry scoring films like 1978's Laserblast and The Man With Two Brains in 1983, before landing work on futuristic TV series Super Force in 1991.
He went on to provide music for the series The Untouchables, Hawkeye, Diagnosis Murder and Stargate Sg-1, and its subsequent spin-offs Stargate: Atlantis and SgU Stargate Universe. The three-time Emmy nominee also contributed to 1996 movie Star Trek: First Contact, which was scored by his father.
Mourning the loss of Goldsmith, fellow Stargate composer Neal Acree says, "I’m utterly heartbroken at the loss of my dear friend and mentor Joel Goldsmith. He was like a second father to me and I feel like I owe much of my career to the opportunities he gave me including my first feature film and first experience scoring television. His influence on my life, both personally and musically, will stay with me always."
