British composer and radio broadcaster Michael Berkeley has been appointed to the House of Lords.

The 64 year old, who was made a Commander of the British Empire (Cbe) in 2012 in recognition of his services to music, will serve as a non-party political peer in the upper house of the U.K. Parliament.

He states, "I am particularly pleased that the Appointments Commission was keen to increase representation in the field of music and the arts."

As a composer, Berkeley has written music for the Royal Ballet and he collaborated with U2 rocker The Edge to score 1986 movie Captive, while he has also hosted the weekly Bbc programme Private Passions for over 15 years.
