Top conductor Alan Gilbert halted a performance of Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony in New York on Wednesday night (11Jan12) to scold an audience member who forgot to turn his cellphone off.
Gilbert was leading the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall when he was distracted by an iPhone ringtone coming from the front row behind him.
The angry maestro stopped the show, put down his baton and turned to confront the audience member.
Blogger Michael Jo reports, "As Alan Gilbert turned to the first violins and the sound grew ever more hushed and veiled, the unmistakable chimes of the iPhone Marimba ringtone resounded loud and clear throughout Avery Fisher Hall."
Gilbert asked the fan, "Are you finished?" and added, "Fine, we'll wait."
The spectator hurriedly shut off his phone as audience members urged venue bosses to eject him and fine him.
Finally, Gilbert took up his baton and continued with the show after apologising to the audience, stating, "Usually, when there's a disturbance like this, it is best to ignore it, because addressing it is sometimes worse than the disturbance itself. But this was so egregious that I could not allow it."
