A new thriller by Dan Brown, author of the international bestseller The Da Vinci Code, will be published on September 15th, it has been announced.

The Lost Symbol, one of the most eagerly awaited titles in publishing history, will be Brown's first novel in six years, after The Da Vinci Code sold a staggering 81 million copies.

Though the plot details for The Lost Symbol have been remained closely under wraps, it features the hero of The Da Vinci Code and its prequel Angels and Demons, symbologist Robert Langdon, and is set over a 12-hour timeframe.

It is also believed to be set in Washington DC and see Langdon unravelling a conspiracy involving freemasonry,

"This novel has been a strange and wonderful journey," said Brown, after the announcement of the book's huge initial print run of 6.5 million copies.

"Weaving five years of research into the story's 12-hour timeframe was an exhilarating challenge. Robert Langdon's life clearly moves a lot faster than mine."

His US publisher Sonny Mehta described The Lost Symbol as "a brilliant and compelling thriller" which was "well worth the wait".

"Dan Brown's prodigious talent for storytelling, infused with history, codes and intrigue, is on full display in this new book," he added.

"This is a great day for readers and booksellers."

The Da Vinci Code, Brown's fourth novel and the UK's bestselling adult paperback of all time, became a global phenomenon after its 2003 release, spawning a feature film which earned $758 million worldwide in 2006.

After the success of The Da Vinci Code novel, which tells of a plot involving the Catholic church and the bloodline of Jesus Christ, Brown's three other books - Angels and Demon, Deception Point and Digital Fortress - became the second, third and fourth bestselling adult paperbacks in British history.
