The 4,000 attendees of the 79th annual Wee Waa Show in the small farming town will be treated to an exclusive set by the band, which will also be beamed around the world.

Local mayor Conrad Bolton told the Narrabri Courier newspaper about how he heard the news, saying: ''It was a random call... from Sony Australia... and after the call, of course, I hung up and thought, 'Which one of my mates is pulling my leg here'.

''It was so left of field. As it turned out it was a fair dinkum call and we've been working on it since then. It's been hard to keep a cap on it.''

Daft Punk - Thomas Bangalter, 38, and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, 39 - are rumoured to have collaborated with a large cast of people for their fourth album, including rapper Pharrell Williams and The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas.

Those confirmed to have contributed to the record include disco producer Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder and Todd Edwards.

Speaking about working with the duo, Giorgio recently said: ''They had to do something which is different, still dance, still electronic but to get that human touch back.

''It's time to have something new in the dance world, this is a step forward.''

'Random Access Memories' is released in Europe on May 17, in the UK on May 20 and the US on May 21.
