David Walliams - David Walliams To Star In 'Sexual' Shakespeare Production
David Walliams has landed his dream Shakespeare role, according to a Daily Mail report today (June 15, 2012). The Little Britain comedian will be playing the role of Bottom in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in London's West End. The production will also star Sheridan Smith as Titania, queen of the fairies and will be directed by Michael Grandage, as part of his 14 month residency at the Noel Coward theatre in the UK capital.
Michael Grandage told the Daily Mail that when he met David and Sheridan, he told them "let's make it a really, absolutely sexual production. In the play, David Walliams' character Bottom has his head turned into that of a donkey by a mischievous fairy named Puck. Titania has a spell placed on her by the king, Oberon, to teach her a lesson and falls in love with Bottom. Grandage explained: "once in the forest, there's a kind of anarchic sexual freedom, and the casting of Sheridan and David helps me define that." Performances of the play are scheduled to begin on September 7, 2013.
Grandage has several works in the pipeline for his tenure at the theatre. Dame Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw have been cast in John Logan's new drama Peter and Alice. Further to this, Daniel Radcliffe has been cast in Martin MCDonagh's play The Cripple Of Inishmaan. Radcliffe will play the role of a young man with a withered hand and foot, living off the west coast of Ireland and dreaming of escape.
