Death Cab For Cutie Score Us #1 Albumby Contributor | 22 May 2008
US indie rock band Death Cab For Cutie have achieved their first ever number one album across the Atlantic, with new release Narrow Stairs topping the Billboard Hot 200.
After selling an estimated 144,000 copies in its first week on release, the Washington band's sixth album knocked last week's chart topper, Neil Diamond's Home Before Dark, off the number one spot.
Their second album for Atlantic Records having released four independent LPs, Narrow Stairs' sales easily surpassed the 90,000 units shipped by its predecessor Plans.
As well as touring throughout North America this summer, Ben Gibbard's band will crown a series of shows in Birmingham, Manchester and London with an appearance at the Latitude festival.
Nothing But The Best, a Frank Sinatra compilation released in conjunction with the tenth anniversary of Ol' Blue Eyes' death, entered the chart at number two, while singer-songwriter Jason Mraz achieved his highest US chart position with new effort We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things.
And Welsh singer Duffy followed her chart-topping success in the UK by entering the Billboard 200 at number four, shipping 71,000 copies of Rockferry in its week on release across the Atlantic according to Nielsen Soundscan.
