Debra Messing will always feel ''guilty'' about her divorce because her son Roman won't grow up in the same 'fantasy' family she did.
Debra Messing will always feel ''guilty'' about her divorce.
The 'Smash' star filed for divorce from her husband Daniel Zelman last June, and feels bad for their nine-year-old son, Roman, even though they did everything they could to make their 10-year marriage work.
The 44-year-old actress told the June issue of More magazine: ''We both wanted it to last forever, and it's a sad thing that it wasn't able to go the course.
''Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn't able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me.
''We really tried. We made sacrifices and compromises, and in the end we both realised that we like the day-to-day domestic life.''
But Debra insists that she and Daniel are still on good terms because their son is their top priority.
She said: ''Now we are co-parenting beautifully ... We had Thanksgiving together. In my mind, we will be a nuclear family forever.''
Debra, who is now dating her co-star Will Chase, previously admitted the breakdown of her marriage made her question the idea of life long love.
The former 'Will & Grace' star said: ''Twenty years. It's a very long time. I think the institute of marriage is a noble thing. The idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we're living to 100. A hundred years ago people were dying at age 37. Til death do us part was a much different deal.''
