Demme Exposes Struggles After Katrina
Academy award-winning director Jonathan Demme exposes the struggles of New Orleans' impoverished residents after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina in his new film New Home Movies From The Lower Ninth Ward.
The filmmaker worked on a "shoestring" budget for over a year to document the residents' efforts to stay out of flooded ruins and rebuild their city.
He says, "Life writes your script when you do these documentaries. Instead of trying to make fiction real, I was trying to find what was dramatic and entertaining about reality.
"(Katrina aftermath) can't go unrecorded. I'm going to keep milking this for a long, long time."
