'DEXTER', the multi-award winning American drama starring Michael C. Hall as the serial killer 'Dexter Morgan', has been given the go-ahead to start work on a sixth season, Showtime announced this morning (13th December 2010). Shortly after announcing the news, DAVID NEVINS, President of Entertainment for Showtime Networks, said, "This is the easiest decision I've made since I got to Showtime."
'Dexter', which aired its season 5 finale last night (12th December 2010) has steadily built its fan-base in recent years, and the latest season has seen the show record its highest ratings ever. The season's 10th episode, which broadcast on 28th November 2010, delivered viewing figures of 2.54 million, up 77% from the season 5 premiere which saw 1.77 million tuning in. Michael C Hall, who underwent treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma earlier this year, won a Golden Globe award for his role as the anti-hero back in January.
Although there is currently no word on when season six will premiere, filming is expected to go ahead next spring. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, executive producer SARA COLLETON said the writing process for a new series is always the same, saying, "What we always do is say 'Where is Dexter now? Where would we be, having gone through what he just went through? And then we start there and refract it to Dexter's special needs".
