DISH Network, the satellite TV service, has launched a free app for the iPad that, when used in conjunction with its commercial-skipping Hopper DVR, eliminates the need for a remote. While the Hopper can only skip commercials on programs that users have recorded, the app also enhances live programming as well, the company said in a statement. For Example, it will provide statistical information about televised sports contests while they are in progress. Seeing the big events live is always better and Explorer helps deliver that experience, said Vivek Khemka, DISH's head of product management. The app, which requires a wi-fi connection, will also ease searches for particular programs, since the iPad's onscreen keyboard can be used instead of a remote. It also allows users to switch to programs recommended by other users on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
