The Walt Disney Co. has struck a deal with BSkyB, the News Corp-controlled British satellite service, to launch a pay-TV channel, Sky Movies Disney, that will show classic Disney films and also have first-run TV rights for newer films. The deal also includes rights to air movies from Disney's Pixar, Lucasfilm and Marvel libraries. The channel, due to launch on March 28, will be offered as part of Sky's basic service. In a statement, Ian Lewis, director of Sky Movies, said: Disney's movies are loved by all ages and generations, so we're delighted to be bringing this new channel to millions of families at no extra cost. Sky Movies Disney will be the home of new and classic Disney and Disney/Pixar movies and will offer all new titles at least a year before other TV channels or subscription services. The deal comes as Sky's online rivals Netflix and Amazon's Love Films attempt to compete by streaming older films and TV shows. Sky implied that it will also offer the Disney fare online, noting that its customers will be able to enjoy the very best of Disney on their own terms, whether that's watching on demand, on the move or in 3D.
