Australian singer Georgi Kay paid tribute to tragic Divinyls frontwoman Chrissy Amphlett when she opened the 2013 Australasian Performing Right Association (Apra) Awards on Monday (17Jun13).

The 20-year-old pop star launched the ceremony Down Under with a cover of the Divinyls' 1981 hit Boys in Town in memory of Amphlett, who lost her battle with cancer in April (13).

Kay hailed the I Touch Myself singer as "the main female rock icon in Australia", telling The Australian, "There's so much love for her. She has been a big inspiration to a lot of artists and she has had a big influence on songwriters."

The performance began a victorious evening for Kay, who went on to win the Dance Work of the Year award for her hit track In My Mind at the Melbourne prizegiving, which recognises songwriting skills, sales and airplay performance.

Other winners included rockers Tame Impala, whose track Feels Like We Only Go Backwards was named Song of the Year, and The Seekers, who picked up the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music.

Sia was crowned Songwriter of the Year, Timomatic's Set it Off was lauded as the Most Played Australian Work, while Gotye landed the Most Performed Work Overseas honour for Somebody That I Used To Know, and Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe was declared International Work of the Year.
