The Hollywood premiere of Django Unchained has been cancelled out of respect for the victims of the Connecticut elementary school shooting on Friday (14Dec12).
The red carpet event for Quentin Tarantino's latest movie was set to take place at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in Beverly Hills, California on Tuesday (18Dec12), but it has been scrapped following the tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where 26 people were shot dead by a lone gunman.
The film will instead be shown at a private screening with no media coverage.
A statement from The Weinstein Company reads, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the tragedy in Newtown, Ct and in this time of national mourning we have decided to forgo our scheduled event.
"However, we will be holding a private screening for the cast and crew and their friends and families."
The move comes after Tarantino defended his Western against criticism over its violent content in light of the massacre.
He told a press conference on Saturday (15Dec12), "I just think, you know, there's violence in the world, tragedies happen, blame the playmakers. It's a Western. Give me a break."
It is the latest film premiere to be scrapped - the planned Saturday (15Dec12) unveiling of Tom Cruise's new blockbuster Jack Reacher was pulled, while the Los Angeles screening of Billy Crystal and Bette Midler's new comedy Parental Guidance was also axed this weekend.
