Veteran rocker Gregg Allman almost blew his chances of romancing pop icon Cher after falling asleep while high on drugs during their first date.
The Allman Brothers Band star has opened up about his relationship with the Believe hitmaker in his new memoir My Cross to Bear, and he admits the romance appeared doomed from the start because the two stars "didn't have s**t to say" to one another when he first took her out for dinner in January, 1975.
In an excerpt from the book, obtained by Rolling Stone magazine, Allman reveals he took Cher to a mutual friend's house after the meal, and inadvertently left her to fend for herself when he slipped away to take heroin and "nodded out in the bathroom for 20 minutes or so".
Allman realised the error of his ways the next morning, and called to apologise for his behaviour - and won another chance to woo Cher.
The second date was much more successful and the couple ended up in bed.
He writes, "We made some serious love."
Cher and Allman went on to wed in Las Vegas six months later, and they welcomed a son, Elijah Blue Allman, in July, 1976. But the happiness was short-lived - the couple split after two years and divorced in 1979.
