Elvis Presley fans began flocking to Memphis this week to prepare to honor the 34th anniversary of the singer's death (16th August 2011). Each year, thousands of followers arrive in the city to take part in 'Elvis Week', which includes a tribute ceremony at Presley's home Graceland, reports Fox News.
Reports say fans of the late star were forming queues to gain entry to the historic residence as early as Monday morning. Hal Lanksy, the son of Presley's costume maker Bernard Lanksy said, "My dad said, Elvis would rather shop than eat". A special event held on Sunday at the Lanksy Bros clothing store saw over 200 people gather dressed in the singer's famous 1970's attire. Local celebrity George Klein, who attended the tribute, said, "I remember when (Elvis) first started out and he was singing with country shows.Guys came out with cowboy uniforms but Elvis came out with a black jacket, pink shirt and pink pants and he just stood out like a sore thumb". Elvis died on 16th August 1977 after being found unresponsive on his bathroom floor shortly before he was due to fly out of Memphis for a tour. Attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at the city's Baptist Memorial Hospital in the early hours of the morning.
This year also marks the 55th anniversary of Elvis Presley's first two albums, of which he sold 800,000 copies as well as 10 million singles.
