George Entwistle has been selected by the BBC Trust to become the new director-general of the BBC, succeeding Mark Thompson. Entwistle, a longtime BBC hand who is a former editor of the BBC's nightly current affairs program Newsnight who was given the key position of director of BBC Vision last year. The position of director general of the BBC is regarded as the most powerful broadcasting post in the U.K. Several reports took note of the fact that the cash-strapped BBC will be paying him £450,000 ($700,000) per year, far below the £671,000 ($1.05 million) that Thompson had been drawing.
