Fans have camped for a number of nights to see a free show by Paul McCartney at a Los Angeles record store.

Sleeping bags and folded chairs were a common site along the Hollywood street as dedicated fans of the former Beatle put in the hours to get access to the intimate show.

Toni Johnson, a 55-year-old fan who flew into to LA from Chicago to queue for the gig, told the Associated Press news agency: "It was noisy, cold. I was trying to sleep upright in a chair. I'm on two hours of sleep.

"But for Paul, it's worth it. His music touches my soul and puts a smile on my face like no one else."

Wristbands will be allocated to waiting fans during today ahead of the Thursday show and it is expected that 300 people will be allowed inside.

McCartney has already played two small shows since the release of his new album Memory Almost Full: one in London and another in New York.

The star's 21st solo offering has gone down well with critics and has resulted in his best performance in the US charts for some years.

Memory Almost Full is released on a new label owned by the Starbucks coffee chain and is the first musical offering from the new company.

The former Beatle is reportedly enjoying his recent live performances, but he is not expected to tour anytime soon.
