The ESPN editor who was fired for using "chink in the armor" in a headline about New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin insisted on Monday that he was not looking for a pun based on Lin's race when he wrote it. Anthony Federico told the New York Daily News "This had nothing to do with me being cute or punny. ... I'm so sorry that I offended people. I'm so sorry if I offended Jeremy." Federico, a veteran journalist, said that he had used the "chink in the armor" phrase "at least 100 times" in headlines in the past and never thought of the possible racial slur when he placed it on the Knicks' story. Commented the Daily News "It was Federico's last headline of the night before heading home at 2 30 a.m. It might be the last he ever writes."
