For Colored Girls Movie Opens To Rave Reviews
The much-anticipated movie 'For Colored Girls' opens in the US today (5th November 2010) after gaining rave reviews from critics in recent weeks. The film is based on the 1974 Broadway play 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf', and tackles issues such as rape, abortion, and domestic violence.
The movie adaptation has been directed by Tyler Perry and was primarily filmed in Atlanta Georgia. The cast includes Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, and Kerry Washington. Mariah Carey was also cast in the film, but pulled out of the project in May 2010 citing medical reasons, with Thandie Newton coming in to replace her. E! Online commented on the standard of the acting in the movie, saying, "Seldom do actresses of this caliber get this kind of material; standouts include Elise as a suffering young mother and Newton as a wild child learning to find her center". The Los Angeles Times said, "'For Colored Girls' is the most mature work yet for Perry, whose emotional nakedness is as visible in this piece as that of his cast".
The film hits cinemas today (5th November 2010) and will open in the UK on 14th January 2011.
