Tom Ford - Ford: 'Filmmaking Saved Me From Disastrous 40s'

Fashion-designer-turned-director Tom Ford has credited his "cathartic" move into filmmaking with saving him from a mid-life crisis.
Ford fell into a deep depression when he turned 40 in 2001 and realised he had already achieved so much in his personal life and career, leaving him with little direction.
But he admits he was re-invigorated after turning to film and produced, wrote and directed his debut, A Single Man.
He tells Britain's InStyle magazine, "Turning 40 was a disaster. I had achieved everything so early - you know, in my mid-thirties - money, success, houses, Richard (Buckley, his partner), fame and everything - and I didn't know what next. So 40 to 46 was horrible. Making the film turned it all around."
And he believes giving up alcohol has also improved his emotional wellbeing.
He adds, "I realised I was drinking (too much) because I was doing a lot of things I didn't want to do. And so now I don't do them. I have a different life, different friends. I feel so much better.
"I lost weight, everything came together. I don't know if I was an alcoholic or if I just drank too much. I didn't go to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous meetings), but I had a great therapist."
