Fox Throws The Book At Avatar
Despite complaints from some liberal groups and individuals that the Avatar plot runs counter to Martin Luther King's dream of racial equality, the national holiday honoring the civil rights leader is expected to see the 20th Century Fox blockbuster remain at the top of the box office for the fifth straight week. No film has accomplished that feat in more than a decade (1999's The Sixth Sense ). It will face heavy competition, however, from Warner Bros.' The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. Also opening is the Lionsgate kids' comedy The Spy Next Door , starring Jackie Chan, Billy Ray Cyrus and George Lopez. Each of the three films is likely to attract big crowds over the holiday, according to box-office analysts; Daily Variety said today (Friday) together they could produce another record-breaking weekend. In addition Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones , which Paramount and Dreamworks have been screening in limited release, is expanding, accompanied by a new marketing campaign aimed at teenage girls and young women. The film, about a girl who is raped and murdered and enters an "in-between" world, disappointed in its limited run.
