Fox Sports has issued an apology for what might have become a technical disaster of the first order on Sunday when the rigging of an overhead camera broke at the Charlotte Motor Speedway during the NASCAR 600, injuring at least 10 people (none seriously) and causing officials to halt the race temporarily. The broadcaster said in a statement that it is examining maintenance records of the rigging and reviewing installation data. About a fifth of the way into the race (at lap 121) one of the cables holding a TV camera snapped and fell onto the track and the bottom rows of spectators. It was then shredded by race cars driving over it. Fox said that the cable was made of Dyneema, which, it claimed, has the tensile strength of steel. At this time, we still do not have a cause for what happened, but a full investigation is underway, and use of the camera is suspended indefinitely, a Fox statement said.
