Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 85, Suffering From Dementia

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's brother has claimed that the Colombian writer is suffering from dementia, Bbc News reported on July 7, 2012. Jaime Garcia Marquez was speaking at a student lecture in the city of Cartegna when he revealed that Gabriel, who is now aged 85, often rings him to ask him basic questions and confirmed that he has problems with his memory.
Jaime had been invited to the lecture, to discuss his relationship with 'Gabo' (Gabriel's nickname) and explained "He is doing well physically, but he has been suffering from dementia for a long time," he said. "He still has the humour, joy and enthusiasm that he has always had. It is a disease that runs in the family." Jaime also confirmed, during the lecture, that the famed author has stopped writing altogether and said "he has problems with his memory. Sometimes I cry because I feel like I'm losing him." Jaime, a younger brother of the author's is the first of his family members to speak publicly about the rumored deterioration of Gabriel's mental health.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez currently lives in Mexico and has made very few public appearances in the last few years. He is perhaps best known for his 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, considered to be a masterpiece of magic realism. Amongst his other best-known titles are Love in the Time of Cholera and Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
