Rocker Gary Glitter will be freed from a Vietnamese prison three months early, following a court decision today.

Glitter is serving a three-year sentence after being convicted of molesting two girls, aged ten and 11. He has been in jail since November 2005 on charges of "obscene acts with children".

However, prisoners with a good behaviour records in Vietnam traditionally get their sentences reduced by three months just before Tet, the Lunar New Year. He will now be released in August of 2008.

Earlier this week, prison officers recommended that the British rocker have his sentence reduced for good behaviour.

"Glitter is an old man, and he is not in good health," said his lawyer Le Thanh Kinh. "And he has paid compensation to the victims as required by the court."

Glitter was ordered to pay 5 million Vietnamese dong (£180) in compensation by the court.

It is unknown where Glitter will move to after his release from prison. He will be deported from Vietnam on his release, and has already been expelled from Cambodia. A return to the UK could see him face additional charges.

In 1999, he was sentenced to four months in jail in the UK after pleading guilty to charges of downloading porn depicting children being abused.
