GEORGE LUCAS is set to release the 'Star Wars' films in 3D, reports BBC News. The director has announced that the entire saga will be converted to the new format, and a statement on the official Star Wars website said, "The cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level".
'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace' is set to be the first of the movies to get the 3D treatment, with a release expected in 2012. It has been reported that 66-year-old Lucas was initially reluctant to convert the films into 3D until there were sufficient screens available to show them, but last month it was announced that 3D film takings in the UK had increased by 8%.
SIMON PEGG, the British actor and keen science fiction fan, gave his thoughts on the news via his Twitter page, saying, "Watching TPM (The Phantom Menace) in 3D would be like the car actually crashing into your face as opposed to just unfolding before your eyes" After the major success of recent 3D films such as JAMES CAMERON's 'Avatar', film companies are now keen to convert their back catalogues, DreamWorks are currently converting the first three 'Shrek' movies into 3D, and Warner Bros are expected to rerelease the 'Harry Potter' franchise using the new format.
