Gerard Depardieu's drink-driving case in France has been adjourned until May (13) after the actor skipped a court hearing on Friday (05Apr13) due to work commitments.

The Cyrano de Bergerac star is facing prosecution over a scooter crash in Paris in November (12), but he was a no-show as the issue returned to a Paris criminal court this week.

His lawyer, Eric de Caumont, claimed the 64 year old was forced to miss the hearing because he was in the middle of filming a movie in the U.S. about disgraced former International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and he requested the case be pushed back to a later date.

The judge approved the motion and set a new date for 24 May (13).

It was Depardieu's second court absence after missing a similar hearing in the case in January (13).

If convicted, the actor - who gave up his French citizenship to become a Russian resident earlier this year (13) - faces a possible two-year prison sentence and a hefty fine.

The adjournment will be welcome news for the outspoken star after the complex which houses his new apartment in Chechnya, Russia, went up in flames on Wednesday (03Apr13). It is not yet clear how much damage Depardieu's pad suffered in the fire.
