Hollywood star Mel Gibson has been praised by a Malibu, California judge for making steady progress in a court-ordered alcohol rehabilitation program following his drink-driving arrest last year (06). Gibson infamously made anti-Semitic remarks during his arrest for driving under the influence in July 2006. He was sentenced to three years probation, fined $1,300 (GBP650) and ordered to attend Alcoholic Anonymous meeting for a year. At a hearing in Malibu today (11May07), at which Gibson was not present, Judge Lawrence J. Mira said he was pleased with the filmmaker's progress. Mira, who spoke to Gibson earlier this week (begs07May07), said, "I truly believe the rehabilitation that is being effected in this case is effective, and I don't want to do anything to interrupt that." Gibson will appear in court on 23 August (07) for a final progress report. Mira added, "I do want to see him in court at some point to ensure we are all on the same page. I know his extensive participation in a self-help program - and I should note he has done extensive work, beyond which was required."
