Alexander McQueen was honoured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala ball last night (02.05.11).
The tragic designer - who committed suicide last year - was cited as the theme of the event which marked the launch of the New York museum's Savage Beauty exhibition, charting his career.
While head designer Sarah Burton made her first public appearance since designing Princess Catherine's gown for her wedding to Prince William last Friday (29.04.11), a number of celebrities stepped out in Alexander McQueen outfits.
Supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Sarah Jessica Parker both wore dresses from McQueen's 2005 Autumn collection while Salma Hayek, Naomi Campbell and Daphne Guinness also donned creations from Burton at the label of the late designer.
Stella McCartney's designs were worn by Gwyneth Paltrow, Iman, Rihanna and Madonna, who said of McQueen: "I miss him terribly. Not only as a person but as a designer. I think the fashion business is a little bit dull without him and I loved his provocative punk rock attitude.
"I think his designs were brilliant. I think he was brilliant. And I hope he's having fun wherever he is right now."
Other fashion labels represented at the event include Chanel, Burberry, Tory Burch, Donna Karen and J Mendel.
However, 'Something Borrowed' star Ginnifer Goodwin received widespread praise for her unusual decision to wear Topshop Unique to the ball, choosing a customised emerald green gown with long sleeves.
