If this was Glen Campbell 's last performance - such is the tragic circumstances that surround his later life, the country veteran revealing last year that he was suffering from the memory-loss illness Alzheimer's - then the star's showing at the Grammy Awards at the weekend will go down as one hell of a the final bow. There was no doubt that there was something special in the air last night in Los Angeles as Campbell took to the stage to sing his seminal hit 'Rhinestone Cowboy' in what may be the last time we see him on stage following last year's farewell tour.
Even among the star-studded gathering at the event, it was Campbell who grabbed the imagination of most, with Paul McCartney and Joe Walsh among those singing along to the song's unforgettable chorus. Ever the show man, Campbell had thrust his microphone out to the crowd to sing the chorus and he was duly met with a deafening response. Precluded by two contemporary country stars The Band Perry and Blake Shelton who performed Campbell classics 'Gentle On My Mind' and 'Southern Nights,' it was a momentous occasion for a man who himself has won five Grammys in his distinguished career.
There was maybe a sense of fate in the sky too a, on what may be Campbell's last performance live, the Beach Boys - whom he'd initially been a session guitarist for in the 60s - should play together for the first time in more than 20 years at the same event.
