If last night's Golden Globe Awards proved anything about U.S. television, it's that change is happening and it's not necessarily good news for the networks. A whole spate of new cable channel shows picked up prizes- though ABC's 'Modern Family' took home an honor, beating out 'New Girl' and 'Glee' to retain its Best TV Comedy Series award for the second year in a row.
Elsewhere it was 'the new' that was being celebrated - psychological thriller 'Homeland' only debuted in October and yet three months on saw its lead actress Claire Danes walk up to collect the Best Actress award - confirmation that her first small screen role in a series since 1994's 'My So-Called Life' has been a huge success. The program also took home a substantial gong for itself, taking the Best TV Drama Series honor. Indeed if the shows were new, some of the actors were familiar; Kelsey Grammer was crowned in the Best Drama Actor category for his role in 'Boss,' whilst the hugely decorated Jessica Lange won a supporting role award for her performances in FX thriller 'American Horror Story.'
Other shows to win awards included 'Enlightened,' whose Laura Dern won Best Comedy Actress, and Britain's 'Downton Abbey' which received the Best TV Mini-Series Award. There was also a perhaps an overdue win for former 'Friends' star Matt Le Blanc, who was recognised for his appearances in TV industry satire 'Episodes.' With the evident pace of change however, who's to know if these shows will even be in the running 12 months from now.
