Blondie star Debbie Harry was devastated to hear about a fatal shooting in Arizona earlier this month (Jan11), branding the political shooting spree "insane".
Jared Lee Loughner is alleged to have embarked on a shooting spree at a political event in the state on 8 January (11), killing six, including a nine-year-old child, as well as seriously injuring congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Harry is convinced the "radical" killing is down to unrest about the state of the country's politics, and she's urging Americans to stand "united" once more in a bid to avoid further tragedy.
She tells Britain's The People newspaper, "America is insane with all this hard politicking and hatred. The United States used to stand for so many things and was supposed to be united. But it seems like everyone has forgotten these things.
"The country is anything but united at the moment because there are all these issues about censorship, eliminating Muslims, not allowing religious freedom. These are constitutionally important things that are being lost by people who are radical in the wrong direction.
"People should be radical but only to support the constitution."
Loughner appeared in a Phoenix, Arizona court last Monday (10Jan11) to face a number of charges in relation to the attack. He is being held without bail and is due back in court on 24 January (11).
