Paramore - Hayley Williams Welcomes Goth Protection Law
Police chiefs in Manchester, England announced earlier this month (Apr13) they will now treat any assaults on members of "alternative subcultures" as "hate crimes" akin to homophobia and racism.
The new rule was introduced following the shocking 2007 murder of 20-year-old Sophie Lancaster, who was beaten to death in a park by a gang of thugs because of her goth clothing.
Now Paramore frontwoman Williams has praised the new law for helping to combat prejudice.
She tells NME magazine, "To me, especially when I was a teenager, self-expression through music, fashion, and the world that I made up for myself as a young person, was all I had. I think that everyone has a right to represent themselves exactly the way they want, and I think it's great if that right is protected by law.
"People shouldn't be getting hurt over something that personal to them. Don't let anyone scare you out of being the person you are or the person you want to be."
