Heather Locklear has been cleared of a hit and run charge due to a lack of evidence.

The former 'Melrose Place' star was alleged to have collided with a 'no parking sign' sign without alerting police in California in April.

Ventura District Attorney Gregory D. Totten has now issued a statement saying: "Insufficient evidence exists to establish who the driver of the vehicle was at the time of the collision. As a result, no criminal charges will be filed."

On the evening in question a resident had reported the incident after hearing a crash in the middle of the night, and it was reported that Ventura County Sheriff's Department officials had linked damage to Locklear's BMW to the collision.

The star's legal representative, Blair Berk, was adamant her client was not behind the wheel of the car at the time of the one-vehicle crash, and the case has now been thrown out by officials.

Locklear, 48, is currently serving a three-year probation term after she pleaded no contest to reckless driving after being formally charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs in 2008.
