Hector 'macho' Camacho's mother has told reporters the boxer will be taken off life support on Saturday (24Nov12).
The sportsman was declared clinically brain dead by doctors in Puerto Rico on Thursday (22Nov12), two days after he was admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound to the head following a shooting outside a bar in his hometown of Bayamon.
Speaking to reporters outside the clinic in San Juan on Friday night (23Nov12), his mother Maria Matias said, "I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine... My son is only alive for the people who love him."
She explained the life support machine will be turned off once three of Camacho's sons have had the chance to visit their father for the last time, adding, "Until they arrive, we will not disconnect the machine."
The boxer landed the Super Featherweight Champion and Lightweight Champion World Boxing Council titles in the 1980s, and was crowned the World Boxing Organization's Light Welterweight Champion twice in 1989 and 1991, but his boxing career was overshadowed by issues outside the ring.
Camacho battled drug problems and he was arrested on child abuse charges earlier this year (Apr12). He turned himself in to police in Florida following an incident with his young son last year (11).
Camacho was accused of stomping on his kid during a furious altercation at his ex-wife's home.
