Hoffman Was Panicked By Lifetime Achievement Award
Veteran actor Dustin Hoffman put his acting career on hold for three years, because he suffered a panic attack after being given a lifetime achievement award. The Rain Man star was honoured by the American Film Institute in 1999, but the accolade left him feeling like his career was over and he was unable to work again until 2002. He says, "I just stopped for about three-and-a-half years. "It was right after I got the award. I walked into this room full of people and they had, from one wall to the other, pictures of every character I'd ever played. It destroyed me. "I went home that night, got into bed and had a panic attack. "I'd never had one before. It was awful. I felt everything was over."
