The ancestry of some of America's biggest screen stars has been traced back to Britain after close scrutiny of immigration records. Tom Cruise and Halle Berry are just two of the big names checked out by website Ancestry.co.uk. The company has released passenger lists for shipping voyages from the UK to America between 1820 and 1960 proving the Top Gun actor descends from a Welsh family through his paternal great-great-grandfather, DYLAN HENRY MAPOTHER, who emigrated to Louisville, Kentucky in 1850. Meanwhile, Berry can boast Liverpool connections after her maternal grandmother set sail from the city to Philadelphia with her mother in 1912, aged just nine months. Other US celebs with British backgrounds include 'Scottish' business tycoon Donald Trump and 'London' First Lady LAURA BUSH.

OrdinaryFolks

The Guardian, Letters, Saturday, November 11, 2006http://www.guardian.co.uk/letters/story/0,,1945177,00.htmlThe hidden history that lies in our local archivesAfter tracing their own roots, some ordinary folks find celebrities on their family tree (Who do they think they are? November 9). After spending 10years doing my family's genealogy, finding records of Scottish nobles and African slaves who settled on plantations in colonial America; finding Church of England records of nobles, slaves and free women who had children together, I was granted a coat of arms in 2006, by the court of the Lord Lyon, by authority of the Queen. Coat of arms in hand, I wrote to three ofthe British lords who are my cousins, related to an ancestor who emigrated to America after 1712.One of the lords, a leader in parliament, telephoned me and we talked ancestry. I also wrote to Louis Auchincloss, the upper-class American novelist, and we discussed how our mutual ancestors, some from Paisley and some from Glasgow, shipped on the Commerce, mine in 1774 and his in 1794.When I was growing up, a black child in a poor section of New York, I had no idea that my family was related to one of America's wealthiest socialite clans. Genealogy changes what we know about ourselves and each other.Pearl DuncanAuthor of the upcoming book, "DNA, Courage & Ordinary Folks," New York
