Veteran singer MARILYN HORNE has been chosen to receive a lifetime achievement award from Britain's Gramophone magazine.

The 71-year-old Pennsylvania native, whose performing career has spanned nearly half a decade, also heads a nonprofit foundation to encourage young talent and nurture audiences for vocal recitals.

Horne, who admits that it's a challenge to get audiences to listen to classical music, says, "I think I'm making a difference for a lot of young singers."

She adds, "Americans can pretty much sing anything, whereas foreign singers are often limited in style, language, even composer. Americans are fairly utilitarian - you're looking at one. I sing everything!"

Gramophone, considered an authority in the classical recording industry, gave Horne her award earlier today (26SEP05).
