How Much Will Man Of Steel Earn? It's Up In The Air
Man of Steel will be more like solid gold at the box office this weekend, and the only question will be, how golden? Forecasters are predicting that it will take in anywhere from $85 million to $140 million. The last Superman movie, Superman Returns, had a five-day opening during which it took in $84.6 million. The film has divided critics about equally. Most pundits say it will not come close to doing the business that Disney/Marvel's The Avengers did in 2012 or even what Warner's last Batman movie -- The Dark Knight Rises -- did last year. At least not domestically. Overseas, the movie could very well top those films and set new box office records, some analysts predict. The film is opening in 24 markets abroad this weekend. The only other film opening domestically this weekend is the apocalypse comedy This Is the End, which received mostly enthusiastic reviews. It opened on Wednesday and, according to forecasts, is likely to earn around $35-40 million for its five-day opening, about what it cost to produce. Like nearly all horror films in their second week, The Purge is expected to fall steeply at the box office this weekend to around $9-11 million, a 70-percent drop.
