Hugh Hefner - Hugh Hefner's Playboy Club Launch Draws Protesters
The launch of Hugh Hefner's Playboy Club in London on Saturday (04Jun11) was marred by feminist protests over the venue's saucy bunny costumes.
The 85-year-old adult magazine mogul flew to the U.K. to hold a grand opening party at the new venue in the British capital's Mayfair district, but the event turned ugly when activists from feminist group Object began shouting at Hefner as he stepped on the red carpet.
The demonstrators, some dressed in bunny costumes, carried signs which read "I am hopping mad" and "Eff off Heff", while an Object spokesperson told reporters, "This signifies a worrying step backwards in the quest for equality between the sexes. Sexualising and objectifying women as bunny rabbits is not sexy and it is not empowering. It is sexist."
Hefner took the protest in his stride and proceeded into the party, where he sipped champagne with his fiancee Crystal Harris.
He says, "Playboy and the Playboy clubs were the end of sexism. Women were being held in bondage for hundreds of years, owned first by their fathers and then their husbands. Playboy helped to change all that. It's what the sexual revolution was all about."
