It was a pitiful weekend at the box office for the major studios but a very nice one for the smaller, independent ones. Of the top ten films, only three were distributed by one of the Big Five: Identity Thief from Universal; A Good Day to Die Hard, from 20th Century Fox; and Beautiful Creatures from Warner Bros. Identity Thief returned to the top of the heap with $14 million, edging out the Lionsgate/Summit thriller Snitch. Actually, Snitch led Thief on Friday and Sunday but fell behind on Saturday. The remaining three films in the top five ended up in a virtual three-way tie. The Weinstein Co.'s animated Escape from Planet Earth collected $10.7 million; Relativity Media's Safe Haven, $10.5 million; and Fox's A Good Day to Die Hard, $10.2 million. Overall, the box office was down 23 percent from the comparable weekend a year ago, when Act of Valor opened with $24.5 million. The box office has down been down five weeks in a row compared with last year.
