Prolific Indian painter Ganesh Pyne has died at the age of 76.

The artist, who exhibited in both Europe and America, passed away on Tuesday (12Mar13) in a hospital in Calcutta, India after suffering a heart attack.

In a career spanning more than 50 years, Pyne received many awards and accolades for his work including a Lifetime Achievement award from the Indian Chamber of Commerce and the prestigious Raja Ravi Varma award for his contribution to art.

In 1960, Pyne, along with several contemporaries, founded the Society of Contemporary Artists of Calcutta.

He was known as the "painter of darkness" for his dark and sombre images, and drew international recognition for his experimental use of different media in his work.
