Irene Passes; Box Office Returns To Normal
Tropical Storm -- née Hurricane -- Irene did not have the impact on Sunday's box office that studio executives had feared. As the storm, for the most part, failed to live up to its killer image, people returned to their normal activities, which included taking in a movie on Sundays. The result was that while many analysts had predicted that the weekend box office would be the worst of the year, it turned out to be only the second worst -- behind Super Bowl weekend. "Distributors overestimated Irene's effect ... " Daily Variety said in a headline over a story that noted that nearly every one of the top ten performed better than the studios had estimated. The storm certainly had an effect, however, with many theaters closed down, others unreachable because of the lack of public transportation and still others blacked out because of power failures. By Monday, most of those that had been affected by the storm had reopened.
