Legendary Italian film composer Armando Trovajoli has died at the age of 95.

His widow Maria Paola Trovajoli announced the sad news on Saturday (02Mar13), a few days after her husband's death, but declined to give an exact date.

During his lengthy career, Trovajoli penned the music for around 300 films, including Two Women, starring Sophia Loren, Scent of a Woman and Bitter Rice, but perhaps his most famous piece was Roma Nun Fa' la Stupida Stasera.

The title translates roughly to Rome Don't Be Stupid Tonight and was written for the 1962 stage musical Rugantino. I became the Italian city's unofficial anthem.

Trovajoli began his musical career as a pianist, and appeared alongside jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Chet Baker and Louis Armstrong.

Paying tribute to the composer, Gianni Alemanno, Mayor of Rome, said, "The voice of Rome has been extinguished."
