Jake Bugg has labelled One Direction ''terrible''.

The 'Lightning Bolt' musician struggles to see why the 'Kiss You' hitmakers - who took home the Global Success award at the BRITs on Wednesday (20.02.13) - have been compared to iconic bands such as The Beatles as he thinks the five-piece aren't even talented enough to write their own material.

He told Short List magazine: ''Who the f**k is saying [they're the closest thing to rock stars we have these days]? Oh, I'm pretty sure they have a good laugh. But it's easy to, isn't it? When you don't have to write any songs.

''People [call them the new Beatles] because they broke America, but that don't mean a thing. I mean, [One Direction] must know that they're terrible.

''They must know ... calling them the new rock stars is a ridiculous statement. And people should stop making it.''

Band members Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have since hit back at the 18-year-old singer, angered that the comments were made by someone they are a fan of.

Niall wrote on his Twitter: ''Really bugs me that artists we're fans of flip on us in the press ! (sic)'', with Louis joining in: ''Hi @JakeBugg, do you think slagging off boy bands makes you more indie ? (sic)''

It's absurd n unfair to contest David Bowie againt Jake. Hellooo BRIT, if you don't mean to put someone in your award category, then don't! Jake u r unique, very talented, marvelous and awesome to hear and watch. Down to earth, simple lyrics and beautiful musics, and he doesn't need earplug to perform on stage (as most musicians do). Very pure & young. I just hope the music/recording industries won't destroy this young talented artist, just let him do his best. And I personnally agree with Jake, awards & trophies don't mean that a music is beautiful, excellent, lovable or pleasant to hear. Award is only one kind of an advertisement business asking people to punch vote as many as possible not exactly the reflection of hard work of an artist itself. Salute to you Jake and don't let the "cold world" changes you into something you don't want. Amen.
